Dear HDF5 User Community, We are seeking your input on the standardization effort for HDF5. In April 2006 a request for comments (RFC) was posted from the NASA Earth Science Data System Working Group with regards to proposing HDF5 and HDF-EOS5 as community standards. If you are interested in seeing HDF5 as one of the standards for scientific data exchange or you wish to share your experience with HDF5 or HDF-EOS5, we encourage you to participate in the review process and to send your comments to: spg-rfc-007@lists.nasa.gov Please see the original announcement attached below for the review details. The new deadline is July 31, 2006. Thank you! -----Original Message----- From: R. Ullman (for ES-DSWG Standards) Sent: Wednesday, April 26, 2006 6:37 AM To: Recipient List Suppressed Subject: [Spg-announce] Request for Comment,NASA Use of HDF for Earth Science Data NASA Data Systems Stakeholders: Data systems standards are a central enabling component of NASA's strategy for the Earth science data systems. The Earth Science Data Systems Working Group (ESDSWG) for Standards is charged with recommending data systems standards that will enhance interoperation of Earth science data systems within the agency and with partnering organizations. We do this through open review of standards submitted by community stakeholders for endorsement by NASA. It is absolutely essential that members of communities that may be impacted by proposed standards provide input in this process. We are seeking your comment on the Hierarchical Data Format version 5 (HDF5) and/or the Hierarchical Data Format - Earth Observing System version 5 (HDF-EOS5) specifications, both of which are proposed as community standards endorsed for use by NASA data systems. These specifications describe scientific data models, file formats, associated software libraries and application programming interfaces (APIs). We would appreciate your comments on any of these components that you have experience with. The latest versions of the HDF and associated HDF-EOS specifications were submitted to the standards process; these are HDF5 and HDF-EOS5. HDF5 represents a significant departure from previous versions of HDF. HDF-EOS5 supports HDF5, but maintains the previous HDF-EOS interface to the extent possible. Due to the fact that the HDF-EOS5 specification is a profile of the HDF5 specification, the SPG are referencing both specifications in a single review request. Users are requested to review the specification that they are most familiar with. It is however expected that some users may wish to review both. The HDF5 and HDF-EOS5 developers have provided "Requests for Comments" documenting their respective specifications (see links below). The Standards Process Group (SPG) has determined that these proposals are relevant to Earth science data and there is indication of community support especially in, but certainly not limited to, EOS standard data products. The scope of the present review is experience with implementation. If you have experience in defining or implementing data in HDF5 or HDF-EOS5, in developing software tools for HDF5 or HDF-EOS5, or in implementing or modifying HDF5 or HDF-EOS5 software libraries, we'd like to hear from you. If you have tried to work with HDF5 or HDF-EOS5 but abandoned the effort for whatever reason, we'd like to hear about that experience as well. We'd also like to hear from those with experiences with similar data formats about the appropriateness of the proposed specification. The attached PDF document provides guidance.
