Please see The HDF Group's new Support Portal for the latest information.
HDF supports the storing of General, 8-bit, and 24-bit raster images. The General Raster Image interface is designed to provide a more flexible means of storing raster image data than the RIS8 and RIS24 models. It is similar to the SD scientific data set model.
With all three models, you can store information about the dimensions and palette of a raster image. The GR model supports all standard HDF compression methods (RLE, JPEG, GZIP, and adaptive Huffman). The RIS8 model supports RLE, JPEG, and IMCOMP compression. The RIS24 model supports only JPEG compression.
